Mammoth Motocross
There's cool, then there's super cool. For over four decades Mammoth Lakes, California has hosted a motocross race that is definitely super cool. It is the longest continuous runnig motocross event in the U.S.
It all started back in 1968 when Don Rake and some friends built a world class track 8,000 feet up in the Sierra Madres with the support of Dave McCoy and his Mammoth Mountain Ski Area. Getting there is part of the adventure, the mountain road leading up to the small town is scenic, the town itself is friendly and quanist, then a narrowm pine tree lined road opens onto a small valley where the track sits, hardly unchanged, after all these years. It is spectacular!
The event lasts for 10 days, that's a lot of races and a lot of riders and it's hard to believe but most races sell out the day entries open. From Vets to Minis, it has it all. Some of the lucky ones score an entry are not the least surprised when Jeremy McGrath flies by teraing up the track. Every year many, many legends and champions leave their mark on the mountain. And for the race fans, they are guaranteed the thrill of not only seeing the current motocross stars cut also the chance to witness the up and coming factorty riders of tomorrow.
Keeping Mammoth Motocross alvie and well has been no easy task. Over the years teh Mammoth experience continues to be pure joy, the result of some very hard working people. So, big thanks to Mike Colbert, Laurney Carlsson, and murray Miller and all the crew for giving the motocross community and epic race vacation.
And just to pass on some advice for anyone wanting to experience this classic event. Train hard and have your credit card handy at 12:01 am the day entries open and you too may end up with a carved wooden bear!
